Carmen and I were having such a good time with the women in the pub that Carmen suggested we stay the night in Glennloch, even though I had already booked us into a bed and breakfast in Inverness. My first instinct was to say yes. But then pessimism invaded my thoughts. What if we stay, and then we can’t get to the airport in time? What if we miss our flight and can’t book another flight for a few days? And then the most worrisome thought occurred to me. What if something bad happens?

“We have a room in Inverness. I hate to go but maybe we should,” I said to Carmen, wanting to slip back into the comfort of my iron-clad itinerary.

The women groaned, so Anna got on the phone to her friend up the street who just opened a bed and breakfast the week before. “She has one room left,” Anna looked to me, holding the receiver, waiting for my reply.

Keep your promise. “We’ll take it,” I said quickly, shutting my eyes, praying nothing bad happened.

Carmen cheered. “Good job!”

Anna secured our room, hung up, and insisted we come back for dinner. Louise then took us on a tour of the new Glennloch, starting with the crowded visitor’s center.

“As you can see, we’ve made camping, hiking, and fishing equipment available for rent, and loads of bicycles for the whole family,” Louise said, looking at Carmen. “I remember this place was yer idea.”

Carmen smiled proudly. “It’s fantastic.”

I was amazed as I looked around at all the tourists. I heard people speaking German, French, and Italian, which meant Glennloch was attracting more than just Scottish visitors.

“Mind the step,” Louise told us as we followed her back outside. “Down that road is where the Kellys live,” she pointed. “They’re Sarah’s neighbors. They’ve been working round the clock tae open up their own B&B by July because the Donaldsons, where you’ll be staying tonight, are already sold out for the rest of the summer.”

“Where are the Donaldsons?” I asked.

“Right there.” She directed our attention across the town square to a charming home with bright yellow paint and rust colored trim around the windows.

“It’s lovely,” I remarked, taking it in.

“You willnae be disappointed,” Louise insisted before she continued on with her tour, sharing with us that Glennloch now boasted three restaurants, the remodeled café, and there were plans to open an equestrian center the following summer.

Carmen and I told Louise how impressed we were, and she assured us that Glennloch would soon be ranked as one of the top Scottish destinations.
